In the bustling town of Markham, Ontario, Alfonso Tupaz established a haven for coffee enthusiasts with Hatch Coffee. But the origins of his passion go further back, all the way to West Africa in 2009. It was there that Alfonso built a makeshift roaster and roasted his first batch of coffee beans. Although the taste might have been questionable to others, to Alfonso, it was the first sip of his dream coming to life. Upon returning to Canada, Alfonso's vision of opening a specialty coffee business started to materialize. By 2015, he settled in Markham and set up a factory with bright lights and vast windows. The initial months were spent in setting up equipment and smoothing out operations, leading to the launch of their cold brew line in 2016. As the business grew, Alfonso strategically diversified into selling roasted coffee for wholesale in 2017 and even opened a cozy café the following year. Hatch Coffee, now a name recognized and revered among coffee aficionados, didn't just bank on quality beans. Alfonso's team, boasting a diverse background from IT to manufacturing, and science, came together to blend their expertise. They were driven not just by business, but by a mutual respect for the bean and the brew. And while their light roast coffee stood distinct in a market with few such offerings, the community's overwhelming support and their shared passion for innovation and quality made Hatch Coffee what it is today: a testament to Alfonso's journey from a makeshift roaster in Africa to a coffee haven in Canada.
